Lesson Format
Lesson Breakdown:
I typically teach 30 minute lessons, but 45 minute lessons are available as well, usually for a student who has reached a more advanced level. I use the Faber or Alfred piano method books. Each level consists of four books: lesson, performance, technique, and theory. During every lesson, we will learn songs from each book and have a theory assignment. The amount of pages assigned depends on individual student progress. At each lesson, I will hear the songs the student has been working on throughout the week, correct their theory assignment, and go over new songs. I have a lesson notebook for each student in which I write down their weekly assignment. They take those home with them to reference while practicing and also write down their practice times on each week's page.
Teaching style:
I place emphasis on not just learning how to play songs, but to properly understand the concepts behind each piece and to play with accurate technique. Therefore, I stress things such as tempo, dynamics, and finger position. The goal is not to merely learn notes and advance through books, but to play all aspects of the songs well with a strong understanding of the musicality of each piece.
Additional Teaching Materials:
I enjoy teaching about the composers and music history as they come into the songs we are learning. This provides a unique opportunity for students to have a well rounded knowledge of the songs they play. During Christmas, I always teach Christmas music out of an additional book and also try to do a special recital song or two for each student in the spring. As I aim to teach my students a love of music and make it a life long pursuit, I strive to find supplemental songs that interest each different student to ensure that they continue to find piano interesting and fun.
